FAQ

  • A biomarker is a measurable sign of what’s happening in your body. It’s something we can test in a sample (usually blood, sometimes urine, stool or saliva) to check your health, assess risk, or monitor how treatment or lifestyle changes are working.

Results are then compared with reference ranges and interpreted in context (your lifestyle, medical history, and goals).

  • Private blood testing allows you to check key aspects of your health without needing a GP referral. You simply choose a test, collect (or have someone collect) your sample, post it to the laboratory, and view your results securely online.

    How it works:

    • Choose your test on medichecks.com

    • Receive your test kit by post

    • Collect your sample at home, at a clinic, or via home nurse (Test dependant)

    • Return it to the lab using the prepaid envelope

    • View your results online, usually within 2–4 working days

    • Most reports include doctor’s comments unless you choose results-only

  • No.

Make sure you check the individual instructions on the tests you buy.

Different tests measure things that fluctuate throughout the day or respond to food, medication, exercise, stress, and hormones.

Don't waste your money by getting it wrong.

    For example, some instructions include:

    • Taken in the morning (often between 6am and 10am), because hormone and metabolic levels follow daily rhythms.

    • You are well hydrated, as dehydration can make it harder to collect a sample and may alter some markers.

    • You avoid intense exercise, sexual activity, heavy meals, alcohol, or smoking beforehand, as these can temporarily change hormone and metabolic levels.

    • You avoid supplements for 24 hours beforehand, unless the instructions tell you otherwise.
Some vitamins (especially biotin and B vitamins) can directly interfere with test results.

    • You time the test with your menstrual cycle if the test measures reproductive or thyroid hormones (many are most informative around day 2–5 of the cycle).

    • You have recovered from short-term illnesses, as being unwell can temporarily change your results.

  • When you log into your portal at my.medichecks.com, you'll have the opportunity to complete a Lifestyle questionnaire, a Health and Medical History questionnaire, and one for Vital Statistics.

These can help our doctors understand whether there are any lifestyle or health factors which could be influencing your test results.

They can also advise you on any changes that you can make to help you lower any health risks that you may have.

You can change these answers every time you take a test (or as often as you want to) and see whether changes in your lifestyle are correlated with improved blood markers for things like cholesterol, diabetes and liver function.

If you choose not to fill these out, this is not a problem, and your results will be reported more generally.

  • Your results will come with Doctors notes. They will base their interpretation of your results on the information you have provided via the secure Medichecks portal after you purchase.

These Doctors cannot give you prescriptions or further medical treatment.

Both normal and abnormal results should be discussed with your GP, especially if you have a specific set of symptoms.

The benefit of private blood testing is your ability to provide your GP with evidence to take your concerns seriously, especially if you've been dismissed in the past.

  • Most tests return results within 2–4 working days after the sample reaches the lab.
Specialised tests may take longer — expected turnaround is shown on each test page.

    You’ll receive:

    • An email when your sample is received at the lab

    • Another when your results are ready

  • Log in to your account at:
    https://my.medichecks.com

That you have made at check out

    Your results include:

    • Your measurement values

    • Reference ranges

    • Graphs for comparison (if repeat testing)

    • Doctor’s interpretation, unless you choose results-only

  • Yes. Test kits arrive in plain, unbranded packaging with no indication of the contents.
The package is slim enough to fit through a standard letterbox — no need to be home to receive it.

  • If you select Nurse Home Visit at checkout:

    1. Medichecks will refer your order to their partner clinical provider.

    2. They will contact you within ~48 working hours to arrange your appointment.

    3. Your venous sample kit is posted to you containing everything required.

    4. On the day, a qualified nurse will visit your home or workplace to take the sample.

You must have photo ID ready (passport, driving licence, or provisional licence).

The nurse may also post the sample back to the lab for you using the prepaid tracked envelope included in your kit.

PPE / clinical disposables carried by the nurse include:

    • Gloves

    • Alcohol sanitising gel

    • Antiseptic wipes

    • Disposable tourniquet(s)

    • Waste/sharps disposal bags

    Coverage:
Available in most of the UK.
Not currently available outside the UK or on the Isle of Man.
Some remote areas may have limited appointment availability — if so, you’ll be informed and alternative options will be offered.

  • Tests must be purchased by the person who will take the test, using an account in their own name.
This ensures medical records and reference ranges are accurate.

If you want to gift a test:

    • Purchase a Medichecks Gift Card (valid for 12 months).

    • The recipient can then create their own account and order the test themselves.

  • Medichecks are continuously working on their systems to accommodate intersex or transgender individuals.

If you are on HRT, we hope you are getting regular blood tests to monitor your hormone levels already, but you can select either 'Male' or 'Female' labelled tests depending on which sex hormone biomarkers you'd like measured.

Your biological sex can influence a few non-hormone markers, such as your full blood count, liver, and kidney function. Unfortunately, the evidence base on how to interpret these values in intersex and transgender patients receiving gender-affirming hormone treatment is limited. Some current guidance (e.g. from NHS Lothian Laboratories March 2020) advises using ranges for the assigned sex at birth for these markers.

When you take a test, you will have the option to add additional details in the supporting information box.

You can input your gender as M>F or F>M and provide extra details about your transition or your intersex status in this section. Please add this information for each test you take, as not all biomarkers are affected in the same way as you transition (research is divided on this). You do not have to share medication details with us, but it can help the doctor to review your results.

If appropriate, the doctor will provide comments and advice on your hormone results using a representative reference range for the gender you are transitioning to.

Currently, our laboratories default to providing reference ranges according to your sex assigned at birth because they do not know the stage of your transition or whether you take gender-affirming hormone therapy.

    Your results:

If you provide extra information about your transition, your written report on your hormone markers will reflect your affirmed gender. However, your lab results and reference ranges will be displayed according to your birth sex.

Generally, after six months of hormone therapy, your results will fall into the normal range of your affirmed gender.
Between zero and six months, there is a grey area where some sex-specific biomarkers and hormones may fall between male and female ranges.

    What if I’m non-binary?

We advise interpreting your results against your sex assigned at birth for the most accurate reflection of your health.

Some of your results may fall between male and female reference ranges if you take lower-dose masculinising or feminising hormone therapy. In these cases, let our doctors know in your supporting information.

Research in this area is limited, and interpretation is often on an individual basis.

The future

Dementia Blood tests

Pipette Inserted Into Test Tube

As you read this, research is underway to refine a blood test for Alzheimer's disease.

This blood test looks for the levels of specific protein's in the blood (p-tau217) - that same one's that build up in the brain and cause Alzheimer's. This would allow more people to get a definitive diagnosis, right now only 2% of people know for sure the have Alzheimer's. This is because the tests that confirm symptoms are due to protein accumulation are expensive and invasive (Spine puncture required to test spinal fluid and PET scans).

An early, accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is already important, allowing people to access appropriate care and medications.
